This volume opens with pages of poetry, including a transcription of Francis Scott Key's "In Defence of America". The bulk of the manuscript is devoted to recounting Gracie's journey to his native Scotland and England, commencing on September 1, 1815. The travel account offers a description of historic sites, hotels, people met, theater, and scenery. Comments about his daughter, Eliza, and her husband, Charles King, and their children are also present.

Charles King was educated in England. After working in a mercantile house and having an unsuccessful tenure as the editor of the New York American, he was elected president of Columbia College in 1849 and served for 15 years with notable changes for the college under his leadership. Archibald Gracie emigrated from his native Scotland to Petersburg, Va. and then finally settled in New York City where he became a successful shipping magnate. Gracie purchased land along the East River and in 1799 built a Federal style mansion that today is the home of the mayor of New York. Gracie entertained on a grand scale, counting among his guests Louis Philippe, John Quincy Adams, Lafayette, and Washington Irving. Unfortunately, the War of 1812 caused Gracie's financial ruin.
